Ammaia is the Roman piece of this landscape: a city founded around the turn of the millennium and occupied until the mid-6th century, then abandoned as more defensible hilltop settlements such as Marvão took over.

Excavations have revealed the Porta Sul gate, the forum, and the forum baths, plus remains pointing to a theatre and an amphitheatre. Roman roads linked the city to Cáceres, Évora, and Aritio Vetus.
