The megalithic cluster around Castelo de Vide spreads along the Sever river. Its high point, in every sense, is the Menir da Meada: the largest fully human-carved menhir in the Iberian Peninsula and, by radiocarbon dating (4810–5010 BC), the oldest precisely dated standing stone in the world.

Start at the interpretation centre inside the castle, then head out into the countryside — the monuments read far better with that context.
