Classic historic-centre route
Castle → Judiaria → Synagogue → Fonte da Vila → main square. The most direct reading of the walled town.
This is the route most visitors walk first, and for good reason: within a few hundred metres it crosses the medieval founding, the height of the Jewish community, and the waters that gave the town its modern cycle.
Start at the top, at the castle, and walk downhill throughout. The Judiaria lanes are narrow and cobbled — descending is both easier and the best way to read the ogival doorways.

Built up under King Dinis; guided visits. The Megalithic Interpretation Centre is inside the same enclosure.

The best-preserved Jewish quarter ensemble in Portugal, still inhabited.

Synagogue (14th c.)
One of only two surviving medieval synagogues in Portugal. Now a museum, with tebah and mezuzah marks.

16th c., reign of King João III. A National Monument of Public Interest since 1953.
